Here’s a photo collage of making four pizzas (before and after) a marvelous potluck with the “meat-free” veg Meet-Up group of Frederick, MD.
They had an amazing spread of vegan foods and most interesting people. Add that to two bonfires, and you’ve a most memorable evening social event! Kudos to Matt and Lara for being outstanding hosts.
My contribution was four vegan pizzas... Admittedly, it was outrageous to walk in with four pizza boxes (purchased from a local pizzeria) containing pizza made with recipes from my book, but I couldn’t resist seeing how that would go down.
The two pizzas were:
1) “Really Reubenesque”: with a pumpernickel crust, thousand island dressing (homemade pickles), red and green shredded cabbage, sliced mushrooms, slice red onions, paprika, and a mashed potato/horseradish/flax seed topping. Woofers....
2) “Mixed Veg”: with a whole wheat and black bean crust (really!), chopped tender kale, sliced tomatoes, cauliflower, mixed sweet peppers, oregano, black pepper, sliced onion, and millet/sunflower seed/mustard “cheese-like” topping (one of the two pies had sliced black olives on top).
Really fun to see the reaction from other guests. The pizzas were devoured rather quickly, and the host had the smarts to reserve some for later (as he put it, I'm paraphrasing here, “these won’t make it through the night”). Indeed. My own pizzas never make it past the next day’s breakfast.
Great fun, great people, great time. I need more socializing like this. Hard enough to chew through the straps and get out of bed in the morning as it is. Time to stop being such a hermit! There’s some really interesting people out there (y’know, outside Facebook and Twitter? Then there’s this big yellow glowey thing in the sky during the day that turns white at night... WOW! Wonder what the CGI costed...).
