Howdy!  Welcome to the 60th edition of the Mac Cowboy Newsletter.

After a brief hiatus, we're back with lotsa information, several videos, some new digital Howard, and some recipes from a great vegan cookbook as well as a unique vegan "e-cookbook."

Mad Cowboy Newsletter #59 Done!

[from the introduction):  "Howdy! Welcome to the 59th issue of the Mad Cowboy Newsletter. In this issue's "Mad Cow Info Round-Up" you'll find, among many cites, some interesting articles about the molecular similiarity between Altzheimer's disease, diabetes, and Parkinson's disease, how Bovine Tuberculosis can be spread to humans, a deadly fish virus in the Great Lakes, and struggles by the US to get South Korea and Japan to accept our beef.  Note that our "Flu News" section has been updated with more information on the spread of the disease and warnings from gov't and other high officials as to the serious potential epidemic we are facing. There's also an intriguing project using "Google Maps" to track the spread of the disease.

Reading further, there's a dynamite recipe from Nava Atlas (as published in "No More Bull!"), information about the recent pet food recall (and resources available on pet food issues, making your own, and recommended products). There's also studies on the consumption of beef and fertility, a unique analysis comparing the blood of vegans and omnivores, and new discoveries about fat and salt and their relationship to your heart beat rate and blood pressure. A "must see" is the short panel discussion (in "Veg Video Watch") between Drs. McDougall, Esselstyn, and Fuhrman.

57th Mad Cowboy Newsletter out!

C:  "... right now we're having close to a million people die of cardiovascular disease every year, and 500,000 dying of heart attacks.  For many people [1 out of 4] the first manifestation of the disease is that they suddenly find themselves dead. When you think about the attempt to treat this with, let's say, stents --- stents have a mortality that is accepted at 1%, but 1% of a million stents, which is the number that are done per year in this country, adds up to about 10,000 people that are dying.  Now if you had 10,000 U.S. soldiers dying in Iraq this year, that would really be called carnage."

C:  "What I was involved with is something that was ridiculously simple:  when one looks at the epidemiology of heart disease, and you see that it doesn't exist in cultures where they live primarily on plant-based nutrition, and they have a cholesterol of a range, let's say, of 90 to 150, as in the rural Chinese, it just begs the opportunity to take patients who are seriously ill with coronary disease and have them eat this plant-based nutrition and see if we can't absolutely halt the disease, or perhaps even reverse it."

C:  "...the exciting thing is this:  we were able to show... that indeed the disease could be arrested and reversed.  Let's suppose you have a disease that never before has been arrested or reversed.  Then you have several investigators throughout the country, within five or six years, finding the same thing.  Really, this disease is kind of a paper tiger.  Chronic heart disease is not inevitably progressive, like cancer, this is something that really can be changed, can be changed drastically when you make significant changes in the nutritional profile."

C: "Within about 8 to 12 weeks you've down-regulated the fat receptors and it's no longer an issue."

Mad Cow & Milk?

"BACKGROUND: Prions are known to cause transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE) after accumulation in the central nervous system.  There is increasing evidence that prions are also present in body fluids and that prion infection by blood transmission is possible...

METHODOLOGY/FINDINGS: ...we were able to identify prion protein (PrP(C))- the precursor of prions (PrP(Sc))- in milk from humans, cows, sheep, and goats... also found in homogenised and pasteurised off-the-shelf milk...

CONCLUSIONS: In view of a recent study showing evidence of prion replication occurring in the mammary gland of scrapie infected sheep suffering from mastitis, the appearance of PrP(C) in milk implies the possibility that milk of TSE-infected animals serves as source for PrP(Sc)."

[Robert's back!  The incredibly prolific and prescient writer of the 6,000+ subscriber "Not Milk" Yahoo Group column was gone for the past year due to spinal surgery.  Recenty we've seen some new columns appear.  He's latest (excerpted above from here and below) is a stunner.  Robert's the main inspiration for the Mad Cowboy Newsletter, and often writes some of the best (and insightful, sometimes controversial, always interesting) prose about vegan-related issues anywhere  You can read archives of his work here.  How wonderful he's surfaced with another nail in the "why drink milk?" coffin!  His website is also packed with well-referenced reasons for avoiding all dairy products.  Highly recommended.]

Howdy!  Welcome to the 56th edition of the Mad Cowboy Newsletter.  We a couple of special holiday treats today.  First, a letter to y'all from the Big Guy himself. As Howard mentions, the Mad Cowboy Documentary recently won an Artivist Award.  Here's the Press Release and a link to pictures taken at the event.

Also in this issue, we've a new interactive "Mad Cowboy Interview" with Dr. Suzanna Havala Hobbs.  A well-known author, speaker, and nutritionist, Suzanna has just published her 10th book:  "Get the Trans Fat Out:  601 Simple Ways to Cut the Trans Fat Out of Any Diet."  You'll see some snippets from the interview and a link to the full two-parter below.  If you aren't aware of Trans Fat in your diet, you need to be.

Veg Group Censorship II

It's really unfortunate when the owner of a group (vegetarian_group at Yahoo Groups) believes it's ethical to selectively edit posts to her List and not tell the group or poster.  Apparently, the owner also edits out discussions about how unhealthy milk and dairy are, not wishing to offend those who drink/eat the stuff.  Someone wrote concerns about a recipe posted with 10 eggs, a cup of butter, and a cup of whole milk (the nutritional highlights) and got criticized. What's even worse is that expressing surprise at tese covert actions via private e-mail can get one banned without notice and explanation.  IMHO, groups that are moderated by such hidden censorship should be avoided... until the moderator(s) at least let would be and existing members know the real score.
