"Howdy!  Welcome to the 72nd issue of the Mad Cowboy Newsletter.

Today we've got a special end-of-the-year letter from Howard, and an announcement about the new "Heart Healthy Pizza" cookbook (with a Foreward by Howard).

In this edition of the newsletter, you'll learn about the prolific and knowledgeable Dr. Greger's new website, "NutritionFacts" with superb short videos on scores of topics.  There's also information in this issue about which food companies are spending the most on lobbying Congress, a new report on the state of America's Heart Health, and how a very large study indicates that vegetables and fruits significantly lower your risk of strokes.

Reading further, find out about the world's "toughest woman" (hint: she's vegan), see a video of former President Clinton discussing his vegan diet, find out what vegan Ellen Degeneres is up to, and  the stats in a recent survey by the Vegetarian Resource Group on the number of vegans in the United States.  Monsanto has some serious problems, cows contribute much more to Global Climate Change than previously thought, the movie "Farmageddon" is screened on Capitol Hill, crows have a "danger" tool, and the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act is being legally challenged.

Video: Bill Maher & Alice Waters ("Slow Food")

Very enjoyable interview between Maher and Waters regarding diet, food, and related issues.  Although she's not a veg, she's done much to advance a better understanding of real food and the negative impact of fast food.  Her program for teaching kids about growing their own food, "Edible Schoolyard," imho, is a tremendous concept and has much more long-lasting implications than most "healthy school meal programs" I've seen.  It has inspired many similar efforts across the country (and world).

"10 Reasons Why GMOs are not Compatible with Organic Ag"

"Despite fundamental differences in what they represent, there are occasional calls to allow the use of genetic engineering  (which produces genetically modified organisms, known as GMOs) within the USDA National Organic Program. GMO varieties are currently most widespread in corn, soybean, canola and cotton crops, in dairy production, and in minor ingredients, such as dairy cultures, used in food processing, but new products are being introduced and commercialized. POM, Privitizing Water, Pesticides, & Animal Activists

This is an addendum to my recent post.  What many people don't know about POM Wonderful and it's billionaire owner.  I didn't know these things when I wrote the previous post, put POM originally force-fed their juices to animals for testing (even deliberately brain-damaging young mice to see if the juice helped).  Peta announced this stopped in 2007 (article is here).  Furthermore, POM, in 2006, filed a lawsuit to keep activists from putting information about and protesting their company on websites (here).  Many activists believe the reason POM went on a recent campaign to give so many VEGAN bloggers free samples, was to counter the bad image in the vegan community.

POM is quite litigious... they've filed lawsuits against many other beverage makers with claims such they are piggybacking off POM nutritional claims or aren't 100% pure pomegrante juice for the full "health benefits."

Also, from this article:

"Resnick  owns Fiji Water, Pom Wonderful, pesticide manufacturer Suterra and Paramount Agribusiness, the largest farming company in America and the largest pistachio and almond producer in the world. Resnick is also the brain behind a little-known water privatization scheme that brought Enron-style deregulation and privatization to California's water market and made him one of the largest, if not the largest, private water brokers in America. He also happens to be friend and major contributor to Feinstein's political career."

It was through Feinstein that Resnick was able to deliver a personal letter to the White House proposing fewer environmental regulations and more water for his farms."

Finally, check out the hypocrisy on the POM Wonderful website ("about us").  Sustainable?  Community?  Their products "essential to the health of all mankind?"  Unbelievable, yet apparently, a lot of bloggers believed otherwise. 

Personally, even if the health claims panned out, Resnick's unethical behavior, policies, and efforts are such that I would consciously try to avoid purchasing any of his company's proudcts, as I would Monsanto, and any other company damaging the environment while claiming to be "green."  I'm voting with my dollar.

New Film Trailer: "What's "Organic" About Organic?"

"[This film]... rings the alarm for the need to develop an ecological consciousness.  The film illustrates that the organic food debate extends well beyond personal choice and into the realm of social responsibility.

Independence from the US Food Supply

"True freedom requires food independence... I am now celebrating my food independence from the greedy, poisonous food corporations of North America. No more Dean Foods [Silk Products] or PepsiCo in my life. No more being enslaved by Monsanto or ADM. No genetically-modified foods, pesticides, herbicides or terminator seeds are found around here. No long-distance food imports, no waiting in line at the grocery store with a stupid discount card and no more packing my groceries home in toxic plastic bags made from petrochemicals.

My food acquisition process has become ridiculously simple:

Step 1: Walk to the garden (60 seconds).
Step 2: Pick what I want to eat (5-10 enjoyable minutes).
Step 3: Prepare it (juice it, boil it or whatever).
Step 4: Eat it.

This process requires no financial transactions, no taxes, no transportation, no plastic wrappers and no coupons. It does not involve finding a parking spot, going into a building, carrying cash or inhaling the toxic vapors of detergent products that permeate all the aisles of modern grocery stores. There is no need to check a price, enter a UPC bar code or banter with grocery store clerks. Instead, I simply walk to the garden, harvest the food and eat it.

That this simple act is so astonishingly rare is, all by itself, a disturbing commentary about the state of the food supply in America today."

[Full article here and below.  I could not identify with it more... this morning's breakfast was a big handful (each) of homegrown raspberries (black and red), currants, and gooseberries.  Lunch was mixed salad greens salad (from the garden, 'natch).  Dinner will be roasted mixed vegetables from the garden, sauteed garlic with mixed chard (all homegrown), balsamic vinegar, minced dried hot peppers (from last year), some cheap white wine (for cooking), and local steamed corn (local is from the farm a mile up the road).  Well worth all the effort... (better daily workout than in a gym), but... I still haven't sourced an olive oil plant yet... maybe it's not real whole food?]
